Etymologie
Selene (= Mond), in Anlehnung an den in Südamerika und anderswo gebräuchlichen Namen von Selene argenteus, wegen seiner scheiben- oder mondähnlichen Form, obwohl er, wie Lacepède richtig bemerkte, einen fünfeckigen Körper hat, der nur aus der Ferne einem Mond ähnelt.
