Etymologie
Velum (= Segel); guttatus (= gefleckt oder gesprenkelt), bezieht sich auf verstreute schwarze Markierungen auf der ersten Rückenflosse. (Übersetzt aus: The ETYFish Project)
Verbreitung
Westatlantik: Bahamas, St. Eustatius, Tobago und Curaçao.

Status: Stand 21.09.2023:LC Least Concern (nicht gefährdet)
Gefahren für diese Art: Die invasiven Rotfeuerfische fressen wahrscheinlich diese Art, aber es ist wenig über die Auswirkungen bekannt.
