Etymologie
Tytthos (= winzig), bezieht sich auf die geringe Größe (18 mm) von Tyttocharax madeirae; Charax (= typische Gattung der Characiformes), von einem griechischen Wort mit der Bedeutung "Palisade aus spitzen Stöcken", das sich auf dicht gepackte scharfe Zähne bezieht, heute eine gängige Wurzel-Namen-Bildung in der Ordnung.
