Etymologie
Poly (= viele); stictum (= gefleckt), bezieht sich auf zahlreiche Flecken an Kopf und Körper. (Übersetzt aus: The ETYFish Project)
Verbreitung
Gilt als zirkumtropisch, aber es gibt große Lücken in seinem bestätigten Verbreitungsgebiet. Aufzeichnungen liegne vor im gesamten Westpazifik und im nordöstlichen und tropischen Pazifik, auch ist die Art bekannt aus dem westlichen Nordatlantik (Bear Seamount bis Guadeloupe), dem östlichen Atlantik (südlich der Mauretanien-Senegal-Grenze) und dem Indischen Ozean (Oman, Indien, Pakistan, östliches Südafrika, Indonesien). Desmodema polystictum ist aber weder aus dem Nordostatlantik (nördlich vom Senegal) noch aus dem Mittelmeer bekannt.

Status: Stand 1.12.2021:LC Least Concern (nicht gefährdet)
Gefahren für diese Art: Keine größeren Gefahren bekannt.
