Etymologie
Der Gattungsname ist aus Titan und Lebias zusammengesetzt. Laut der griechischen Mythologie waren die Titanen die prä-olympischen Gottheiten. Sie waren die 12 Kinder von Uranos und Gaia und waren berühmt für ihre Größe und Stärke. Benannt in Anlehnung an die Größe der Fische in dieser Gattung innerhalb der Aplocheiloidei, mit einer Größe von T. elongatus bis zu 15,5 cm SL und T. monstrosus bis zu 15 cm; lebias = griechischer Name für eine Art kleinen Fisch, der zuerst von Cuvier (1816) auf Killifische („Les Lebias“) angewendet wurde und jetzt eine gebräuchliche Wurzelnamenbildung in der Ordnung ist.
