Typusfundort: Innerer Hafen, Durban und KwaZulu-Natal, Südafrika, südwestlicher Indischer Ozean.
Etymologie
Von vitrum (= Glas); rostrum (= Schnauze); die Autoren schlagen "Glasnase" als umgangssprachliche Bezeichnung vor, aber die Anspielungen sind weder aus ihrer Beschreibung noch aus anderen Berichten ersichtlich. (Übersetzt aus: The ETYFish Project)
Verbreitung
Thryssa vitritostris ist im Indischen Ozean von der Ostküste Afrikas bei Port Alfred nach Norden bis zum Persischen Golf und nach Osten entlang der Küstengewässer Pakistans und Indiens, möglicherweise bis nach Kalkutta, verbreitet, darüber liegen jedoch keine Aufzeichnungen vor. Diese Art hat einen Tiefenbereich von 0-50 m.

Status: Stand 15.05.2019:LC Least Concern (nicht gefährdet)
Gefahren für diese Art: Diese Art wird gezielt von verschiedenen Fischereien gefangen und ist Bestandteil des Beifangs in der Garnelenfischerei. In Mosambik gibt es Hinweise darauf, dass eine Überfischung die Landungen und die CPUE erheblich beeinträchtigen kann, wobei ein Rückgang von 50% bzw. 20% zu verzeichnen ist. Weitere Untersuchungen sind erforderlich, um festzustellen, wie sich dies auf den Rest ihres Verbreitungsgebietes auswirkt.
