Benannt zu Ehren des Arztes und Naturforschers Josiah Thomas Scovell (1841-1915), der beim Sammeln von Typusexemplaren half. (Übersetzt aus: The ETYFish Project)
Verbreitung
Westlicher Atlantik: Florida (USA) südlich bis Brasilien, einschließlich Golf von Mexiko; Mittel- und Südamerika; gewöhnlich in küstennahen Meereslebensräumen; einige Nachweise aus Süßwasser: Belize, Brasilien, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexiko, Panama, U.S.A. und Venezuela.

Gefahren für diese Art: Möglicherweise gibt es lokale Bedrohungen, aber auf der Ebene des gesamten Verbreitungsgebiets sind keine größeren Bedrohungen bekannt.
