Etymologie

Stigmatus (= markiert), vermutlich in Bezug auf seitliche schwarze Punkte von Stigmatogobius pleurostigma; Gobius, bezieht sich auf die frühere Platzierung von Stigmatogobius pleurostigma in dieser Gattung und / oder Bleekers Klassifizierung dieses Taxons in einer Phalanx, die er Gobiini nannte.
