Holotypus: FMNH 57829 [ex CM 6812].
Paratypen: (19) CAS 59781 [ex IU 14095 (3), CAS-SU 17519 [von FMNH 57830, von CM 6813] (1), 57830 (10, jetzt 9).
Typusfundort: See 4 Meilen von Miguel Calmone, Rio Tietê Becken, Brasilien.
Etymologie
Von notos (= zurück); melas (= schwarz), vermutlich bezogen auf die schwarze Basis der Rückenflosse und / oder ihre schwarzen vorderen Strahlen. (Übersetzt aus: The ETYFish Project)

Oberes Paraná-Einzugsgebiet: Argentinien, Brasilien und Paraguay.
