Etymologie
Melanos (= schwarz); ops (= Aussehen), bezieht sich vermutlich auf den "schwarzbraunen" Oberkörper mit bräunlichen Seiten "schwarz gefleckt". (Übersetzt aus: The ETYFish Project) mit Schwarz".
Verbreitung
Nordpazifik: Nordjapan und Ochotskisches Meer nördlich bis zu den Aleuten (USA), dann südlich bis zur Pazifikküste der nördlichen Baja California (Mexiko).
