Etymologie
Benannt nach dem spanischen Schiff 'San Telmo', das am 2. bis 4. September 1819 am Kap Shirreff auf der Livingston-Insel in der Antarktis unterging, zu Ehren der 644 Männer, die mit dem Schiff untergingen; "Wenn jemand überlebt hätte, wäre er der erste Mensch in der Geschichte, der die Antarktis betreten hat".
