Etymologie
Niger (= schwarz); pinnis (= Flosse), bezieht sich auf schwarze Flecken auf der Rückenflosse, schwarze senkrechte Flossen und/oder paarige Flossen, deren äußere Hälften schwarz sind. (Übersetzt aus: The ETYFish Project)

Irland: Lough Melvin (21 Quadratkilometer).
