Etymologie
Benannt zu Ehren des Chirurgen und Naturforschers Meredith Gairdner (1809-1837), Hudson's Bay Company (eine Pelzhandelsgesellschaft), der die Typusexemplare sammelte und sie zusammen mit einer detaillierten schriftlichen Beschreibung, die Richardson zitierte, an Richardson schickte; Der Name ist "als Tribut an die Verdienste eines jungen, aber fähigen Naturforschers gedacht, von dem die Wissenschaft viele wichtige Errungenschaften erwarten kann, insbesondere in der Geschichte der Zoologie der Nordwestküste Amerikas, falls seine Verpflichtungen bei der Hudson's Bay Company es ihm erlauben, dieses bisher vernachlässigte Beobachtungsgebiet zu kultivieren" (Gairdner starb ein Jahr später an Tuberkulose).
