Typusfundort: Babocomori [Bobocomari] (Karte), ein Nebenfluss des Rio San Pedro, der seinerseits in den Gila River mündet, Cochise County, Arizona, U.S.A.
Etymologie
Diminutiv von os (= Maul, d.h. kleines Maul), Anspielung nicht erklärt, vielleicht auf "ziemlich kleines" Maul wie bei Argyreus beschrieben (= ursprüngliche Gattung, jetzt Rhinichthys). (Übersetzt aus: The ETYFish Project)

U.S.A. und nördliches Mexiko: Gila River.

Status: Stand 7.03.2023:LC Least Concern (nicht gefährdet)
Gefahren für diese Art: Die globale Population von R. osculus ist insgesamt nicht bedroht, aber kleine lokale Populationen sind durch die Veränderung ihres Lebensraums und exotische Arten gefährdet. Gründe für den Rückgang sind u. a. die Entwässerung von Quellen, Oberläufen und mittleren Abschnitten größerer Flüsse, die Aufstauung von Wasser, die Kanalisierung, die Umleitung, die Regulierung von Abflüssen und die Interaktion mit nicht heimischen Arten. Die Unterart Rhinichthys osculus reliquus aus Lander County, Nevada, ist aufgrund der Einführung von Forellen und möglicherweise der Nutzung von Wasser für die Landwirtschaft ausgestorben. Siehe Taylor et al. (1989) für Informationen über die negativen Auswirkungen von Rindern auf Wüstenquellenpopulationen (chemische Veränderung des Wassers). Miller (1961) stellte die Hypothese auf, dass das Aussterben im San Pedro River, Arizona, auf erhöhte Wassertemperaturen infolge von Verschüttungen, verminderter Vegetation und abnehmenden Wassermengen zurückzuführen ist. Cross (1975) stellte die Hypothese auf, dass der Rückgang im Virgin River auf die Einführung nicht einheimischer Fische, die Verringerung des Abflusses und die zunehmende Wasserverschmutzung zurückzuführen ist.
