Etymologie
Remora (= lateinisch für Verzögerung oder Behinderung), ein Name, der auf alte Seefahrer zurückgeht, die glaubten, dass dieser Fisch ein Schiff verlangsamen oder am Segeln hindern könnte; Tatsächlich macht Plinius der Ältere, in seiner Naturgeschichte (ca. 77-79 n. Chr.), die Niederlage von Mark Anton in der Schlacht von Actium, die Remoras verantwortlich, die sich an Mark Antons Schiffen befestigt hatten (eine mögliche Erklärung für diese nautische Überlieferung ist, dass die Remoras an Algen hingen, die auf Rumpf und Kiel des Schiffes wuchsen, und dass es die Algen, nicht die Remoras waren, welche die Schiffe behindert hatten).
