Typusfundort: nicht genannt, wahrscheinlich Indonesien.
Etymologie
Hepta- (= sieben); acanthus (= Stachel), bezieht sich auf sieben stachelige Strahlen in der ersten Rückenflosse, im Vergleich zu 6 oder 10 bei drei Arten, die Lacepède in dieselbe Untergattung stellte. (Übersetzt aus: The ETYFish Project)
Verbreitung
Rotes Meer, Indo-Westpazifik: Ostafrika, Madagaskar und Maskarenen östlich zu den Marshall Inseln, Samoa und Tonga, nördlich nach Südjapan, südlich nach Australien, Lord Howe Insel und Neukaledonien.
