Syntypen: ZMB 5413 (3).
Typusfundort: Wahrscheinlich aus dem Swartkops River system, Cape Colony, South Africa.
Etymologie
Von afer (= Afrikaner); Beschrieben in Capoeta (damals eine Untergattung von Barbus), möglicherweise widerspiegelnd, dass es die einzige Capoeta war, die zu der Zeit aus Afrika bekannt war. (Übersetzt aus: The ETYFish Project)
Verbreitung
Pseudobarbus afer s.s. (Die sogenannte "Mandela-Linie" von Swartz et al., 2007) findet sich in drei isolierten Flusssystemen (Sundays, Swartkops und Baakens), die in die Algoa Bay in der Nähe von Port Elizabeth münden.
