Etymologie
Maximus (= am größten), vermutlich bezogen auf seine Größe (Typusexemplare sind 190 cm SL und 240 cm TL, was weitaus kleiner ist als der größte Plattfisch, Hippoglossus hippoglossus, der 470 cm TL erreichen kann). (Übersetzt aus: The ETYFish Project)
Verbreitung
Nordostatlantik: im gesamten Mittelmeerraum und entlang der europäischen Küste bis zum Polarkreis; auch in den meisten Teilen der Ostsee. Unterart Scophthalmus maximus maeoticus im Schwarzen Meer.
