Typusfundort: vor der Bucht von Panama, 4°56'N, 80°52'W (Karte), Albatross, Tiefe 3.240 m.
Etymologie
Longus (= lang); ceps (= Kopf), 1/6 der Gesamtlänge, ähnlich dem Kopf des Hechts (Esociformes: Esox). (Übersetzt aus: The ETYFish Project)
Verbreitung
Ostpazifik: geographisch auf ein relativ kleines Gebiet beschränkt, hauptsächlich zwischen 10°N und dem Äquator, und erstreckt sich über etwa 800 km vom Kontinentalbruch. Kommt hauptsächlich in Tiefen zwischen 1800 und 3300 m vor, aber zwei Exemplare wurden in sehr flachem Wasser auf 245 m oder nahe der Oberfläche gefangen. Keine andere Porogadus-Art wurde wesentlich flacher als 1000 m gefangen. Der Grund für die ungewöhnlich flachen Fänge dieser sonst tief lebenden Art ist nicht bekannt.
