Etymologie

Poecilo- auf die Ähnlichkeit mit einigen Gattungen der Poeciliidae (Cyprinodontiformes) verweisend; Charax, typische Gattung der Characiformes, aus dem Griechischen mit der Bedeutung "Palisade aus spitzen Stöcken", auf die dicht gepackten scharfen Zähne verweisend, heute eine gängige Wurzel-Namensbildung in der Ordnung.
