Etymologie
Oxys (= scharf oder spitz), Anspielung nicht erklärt, bezieht sich vielleicht auf den Kopf der Typusart Oxyeleotris marmorata, den Bleeker 1852 als spitz und niedergedrückt ("acuto, depresso") beschrieb; Eleotris, damals vermutlich der nächste Verwandte und ursprüngliche Gattung der Typusart.
