Etymologie
Von setosus (= borstig), bezogen auf "viel größere multiserielle setae" (haarähnliche Strukturen) auf der Prämaxille im Vergleich zu dem ähnlichen Mugil curema (möglicherweise bezogen auf eine sympatrische Population, die später als Mugil hospes beschreiben wird). Verbreitung
Mugil setosus kommt im Pazifischen Ozean von Westmexiko bis Nordperu (Department Tumbes) vor; Revillagigedo Islands.
