Etymologie
Der Artname tecta stammt vom lateinischen tectus (= verkleidet, versteckt), da diese Art seit fast drei Jahrhunderten der Entdeckung entgangen ist, trotz des scharfen Interesses bei den frühen Sonnenfisch-Taxonomisten und der anhaltenden Aufmerksamkeit, die diese merkwürdigen Fische erhalten.
Verbreitung
Mola tecta wurde im Südosten Australiens (New South Wales, Südaustralien, Tasmanien und Victoria) gefunden, um Neuseeland und aus Südafrika. Fotografien zeigen, dass die Art auch in chilenischen Gewässern vorkommt. Dies deutet darauf hin, dass M. tecta in den gemäßigten Gewässern der südlichen Hemisphäre weit verbreitet ist, mit gelegentlichen, aber vermutlich seltenen Vorkommen in der nördlichen Hemisphäre. Migrationen sind unbekannt.
