Typusfundort: Südlich von Neuguinea vor der Insel Aru; Molukken, Indonesien, Arafura-Meer, Westpazifik, 5°41'S, 134°04'30"E (Karte), Challenger-Station 191, Tiefe 800 Faden.
Etymologie
Von mizon (= größer); lepis (= Schuppe); bwohl bei dem untersuchten Exemplar von Günther Schuppen fehlten, vermutete er, dass sie „ungewöhnlich groß“ waren. (Übersetzt aus: The ETYFish Project)
Verbreitung
Circumglobal in tropischen Meeren, aber nicht im Ostpazifik.
