Etymologie
Abyssalis (= aus der Tiefsee), vermutlich in Bezug auf den benthopelagischen Lebensraum des Aals (100-329 m) (Kamoharas Artikel beschreibt Fische, die auf 61-381 m gesammelt wurden) [Anmerkung: das Abyss bezieht sich normalerweise auf Wasser, das tiefer als 4000 m ist, aber dieser Aal kommt anscheinend nicht so tief vor].
Verbreitung
Indopazifik: Reunion, Mauritius, Südjapan, Hancock Seamount sowie die Hawaiianischen und Society Inseln, südlich bis Neukaledonien, auch vor Südbrasilien.
