Etymologie
Benannt nach Marjorie Courtenay-Latimer (1907-2004), Kurator, East London Museum. Sie entdeckte die Typusart im Fang eines Fischers und schickte eine Zeichnung an Smith, der sie als lebenden Coelacanthier identifizierte, die zuvor nur von mesozoischen Fossilien bekannt waren.
