Etymologie
Lophos (= Grat oder Kamm), bezieht sich auf die gekielte Scutella, die für die meisten Arten der Gattung typisch ist; kampos (= mythologisches Seeungeheuer), hier wahrscheinlich als allgemeines Suffix für Syngnathiden verwendet, das von der Seepferdchen-Gattung Hippocampus abgeleitet ist.
