Etymologie
Der Artname stammt aus der Typuslokalität der Art, einem Tepui. Tepuis sind charakteristische Tafelberge im Hochland des Guyana Shield. Das Wort Tepui bedeutet "Haus der Götter" in der Muttersprache der Pemon, der Ureinwohner der Gran Savana in Venezuela.

Leporinus tepui ist aus Zuflüssen zum Orinoco-Becken im Hochland des Guyana Shield in Venezuela bekannt.
