Etymologie
Benannt zu Ehren von Francesca Raimonde La Monte (1895–1982), stellvertretende Kuratorin für Ichthyologie am American Museum of Natural History, für Beiträge zur Taxonomie und Ichthyologie als Ganzes. In 86 Artikeln und mehreren Büchern beschrieb LaMonte (1935) zwei Gymnotidenarten, Gymnotus (Tijax) cylindricus und Gymnotus (Tigrinus) coatesi, die jeweils die Typusart ihrer jeweiligen Untergattung repräsentieren.
