Etymologie
Australis (= südlich), unter Bezugnahme auf Exemplare aus dem südlichen Veracruz, Mexiko, die Meek dieser Art zugeordnet hatte. (Übersetzt aus: The ETYFish Project)
Verbreitung
Ostmexiko: Flüsse Blanco bis Panuco.

Status: Stand 3.03.2023: DD Data Deficient (ungenügende Datengrundlage)
Gefahren für diese Art: Die größte Bedrohung für diese Art ist die Überfischung, da sie sehr begehrt ist und von der handwerklichen und kommerziellen Fischerei für den lokalen Verbrauch stark beansprucht wird. Weitere Bedrohungen sind die Veränderung des Lebensraums und die Wasserverschmutzung durch den Bau von Dämmen bzw. durch die Landwirtschaft. Außerdem können invasive Arten der Gattung Pterygoplichthys ihre Eier fressen und sich negativ auf die Populationen auswirken.
