Typusfundort: Rio Jungada, Bundesstaat Mato Grosso, Brasilien.
Etymologie
Von latus (= breit); rostris (= Schnauze), bezieht sich auf seine "breite, runde" Schnauze. (Übersetzt aus: The ETYFish Project)
Verbreitung
Hypostomus latirostris ist von mehreren Fundorten entlang des Rio Cuiabá-Beckens bekannt. Regan (1904) wies auf den Rio Jangada als Typuslokalität hin. Aufzeichnungen von H. latirostris wurden in der gesamten Ausdehnung des Rio Manso und auch im Rio Cuiabá Becken gemacht. Der Rio Manso und der Rio Cuiabazinho bilden zusammen den Rio Cuiabá. Das Rio Cuiabá-Becken liegt hauptsächlich oberhalb des brasilianischen Pantanal.
