Etymologie

Von hyphesson (= kleinere), Anspielung nicht erklärt, vielleicht bezieht es sich auf ihre Größe (Typusexemplar 40 mm); brycon, allgemeiner Begriff verwendet in Gattungsnamen von vielen characiformen Fischen, abgeleitet von bryco (= beißen, knirschende Zähne oder gierig fressen), ursprünglich eine Anspielung auf das voll bezahnte Oberkiefer.
