Etymologie
Von Tåning 1932 als Untergattung von Myctophus vorgeschlagen, aber erst von Bolin 1939 verfügbar gemacht; Etymologie nicht geklärt, aber möglicherweise eine Kombination aus hygo- (in Bezug auf Hygophum hygomii, den Tåning in die Untergattung aufnahm) und -phum, der zweiten Hälfte der mutmaßlichen Nominatgattung Myctophum.
