Etymologie
Benannt zu Ehren des englischen Forschers und Armeeoffiziers John Henning Speke (1827-1864), der mit James Augustus Grant (siehe Haplochromis granti) entdeckte, dass der Victoriasee (wo dieser Cichlide endemisch ist) eine Hauptquelle des Nils ist. (Übersetzt aus: The ETYFish Project)

Status: Stand 13.09.2018: DD Data Deficient (ungenügende Datengrundlage)
Grund für die Gefährdungseinstufung: Die Hauptbedrohung für diese Art ist die Erbeutung durch Nilbarsche (eine möglicherweise reversible Bedrohung). Sie ist auch potentiell gefährdet durch Hybridisierung aufgrund verminderter Wassertransparenz (aufgrund von Eutrophierung und Erosion, was zu verstärkter Sedimentation und Oberflächeneinschwemmung führt), was die visuellen Erkennungsmerkmale bei der Balz beeinträchtigt. Diese Art wird gefischt, obwohl dies nicht gezielt erfolgt.
