Typusfundort: Brasilien, Bundesstaat Rio Grande do Sul, Viamão, Lagoa Verde, Itapuã State Park, Rio Grande, do Sul (30°22’52”S, 51°01’25”W [ (Karte)].
Etymologie
Das spezifische Epitheton ist von dem besonders tiefen Körper und Kopf der Spezies abgeleitet und erinnert an den kurzen, runden Kürbis, der verwendet wird, um den traditionellen Mate zu trinken, der in ganzen Verbreitungsgebiet der Art beliebt ist. Die Konvention, diese Praxis in der Taxonomie von Gymnotiden zu berücksichtigen, wird mit Gymnotus chimarrao (chimarrão = der Mate selbst) und Brachyhypopomus bombilla (bombilla = der Metallstrohhalm, der für das Trinken von Mate verwendet wird) geteilt. Die lokale Bezeichnung "bombilla" wird oft verwendet, um Gymnotiden in den südlichen Neotropen zu beschreiben.
