Etymologie
Benannt zu Ehren von Powell Clayton (1833-1914), US-Minister (Botschafter) in Mexiko, für "viele Gefälligkeiten" während Meeks Feldarbeit in diesem Land in den Jahren 1901 und 1903. (Übersetzt aus: The ETYFish Project)
Verbreitung
Nord- und Mittelamerika: vom Rio Grande (Brownsville) südlich bis zum Rio Coatzacoalcos und Usumacinta/Grijalva-Becken, Tabasco, Mexiko.
IUCN Status
Status: Stand 9.7.2022:VU Vulnerable (gefährdet)
Gefahren für diese Art: Ctenogobius claytonii ist durch Verschmutzung, Wasserumleitung und Lebensraumverlust bedroht. Im Biosphärenreservat Pantanos de Centla ist die submerse Wasservegetation drastisch zurückgegangen bzw. verschwunden, die Eutrophierung ist weit verbreitet, die Überschwemmungsimpulse haben sich verändert, es werden häufig Kanäle und Staudämme oberhalb der hohen Grijalva-Wasserscheide gebaut, das Land wird erschlossen und aufgrund fehlender kommunaler Dienstleistungen werden Rinder- und menschliche Fäkalien in die Gewässer eingetragen.
