Etymologie
Volitans (= fliegen), bezieht sich darauf, wie sich die Art aus dem Wasser heraustreibt und zu fliegen scheint (eigentlich gleitet sie). (Übersetzt aus: The ETYFish Project)

Zirkumglobal in tropischen bis gemäßigten Meeren (einschließlich Karibik und Mittelmeer).
