Nordamerika: Quebec (Kanada) und der Nordosten und die Mitte der Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika.

Gefahren für diese Art: Die Hauptbedrohungen sind der Verlust von Lebensraum (sauberes sandiges Substrat) aufgrund von Verschlammung, der Bau von Stauseen und die Regulierung des Abflusses, was zu Veränderungen der Hochwasserbedingungen führt, die für die Schaffung und Erhaltung von Lebensraum sowie ausreichendem Abfluss im Sommer oder in Dürreperioden wichtig sind, und die Verringerung der Wasserqualität aufgrund von punktueller und nicht punktueller Verschmutzung.
Starke Verschlammung ist ein Problem in stark industrialisierten und landwirtschaftlich genutzten Gebieten. Die Verschlammung kann je nach Art des Anbaus und der Bodenbearbeitung variieren. Die Störung von Uferbereichen wie durch Deiche oder Feuchtgebiete, die Schlammfallen darstellen, kann eine erhebliche Gefahr darstellen. Der Einsatz von Lampriziden zur Bekämpfung von Meerneunaugen könnte die Populationen im Lake Erie und Lake Champlain beeinträchtigen.
