Grund für die Gefährdungseinstufung: Diese Art wird gelegentlich als Beifang in der Tiefseefischerei gefangen. Im Mittelmeer wird sie nicht kommerziell befischt. Wenn sie gefangen wird, kann sie auf dem Markt erscheinen. Modellläufe zeigen, dass die Bestandsbiomasse dieser Art in neuseeländischen Gewässern seit Beginn der Fischerei weiter zurückgegangen ist. Es wurde geschätzt, dass der Bestand der Nordinsel in den Jahren 2008-2009 mit einer geschätzten Biomasse von 12-24% der ursprünglichen Biomasse weitgehend erschöpft ist. Die Überfischung kann für diese Art eine Bedrohung darstellen, da sie langlebig und langsam wächst und sowohl gezielt als auch als Beifang gefangen wird.
