Typusfundort: Batang Ai in der Nähe von Wong Mepal, Bundesstaat Sarawak, Borneo, Ost-Malaysia.
Etymologie
Eu- (= gut); branchos (= Kieme), bezieht sich auf große und schräge Kiemenöffnungen, die sich bis zum Brustflossenursprung erstrecken. (Übersetzt aus: The ETYFish Project)
Verbreitung
Malaysia: endemisch im Engkari River, Lupar-Flussbecken, Süd-Sarawak.
IUCN Status
Status: Stand 25.09.2021:NT Near Threatened (potenziell gefährdet)
Gefahren für diese Art: Das Gelände, in dem diese Art vorkommt, ist topographisch extrem mit hohen Gefällen. Daher kann es bei starken Regenfällen, beispielsweise während der Monsunzeit, zu Erdrutschen kommen, die Populationsschwankungen verursachen können, da Bachlebensräume durch starke Sedimentation stark beeinträchtigt werden. Was ihre Anfälligkeit durch Endemie betrifft, so ist diese Schmerle sehr anfällig für Lebensraumveränderungen, nicht nur weil sie stark an reißende Gewässer angepasst ist, sondern auch, weil sie nur auf eine einzige Entwässerung beschränkt ist.
