Typusfundort: vor Rausu, Halbinsel Shiretoko, Hokkaido, Japan, 800 – 1.200 m Tiefe.
Etymologie
Der Artname nyctereutes ist abgeleitet von den griechischen Wörtern nukt (= Nacht) und ereutēs (= Wanderer), er bezieht sich auf den vermutlichen Lebensraum, der aufgrund des Fehlens einer robusten Beckenscheibe, als Treiben in der dunklen Tiefsee angenommenw wird.
Verbreitung
Weit verbreitet im südlichen Teil des Ochotskischen Meeres, vor Rausu im Osten von Hokkaido, Japan; im Pazifik vor Kamtschatka und den Kurilen; um die Aleuten und im Beringmeer in Tiefen von 362 – 1.200 m.
