Typusfundort: "L'Ocean" (ist Bayonne, Golf von Biskaya, Frankreich, nordöstlicher Atlantik).
Etymologie
Brucus (= lat. für Raupe), vermutlich in Anlehnung an "Chenille" oder "Chenille de mer" (Meeresraupe), lokale Bezeichnungen für diesen Hai an der französischen Atlantikküste (der Typuslokalität) im 18. Jahrhundert. (Übersetzt aus: The ETYFish Project)
Verbreitung
Weltweit (einschließlich Karibisches Meer, Mittelmeer, südliche Nordsee), aber nicht im östlichen Pazifik.
