Etymologie

Oligo- (= wenige); lepis (= Schuppen), bezieht sich auf 40 Schuppen entlang der Seitenlinie, verglichen mit über 50 bei vermuteten Artgenossen in Exocoetus.

Verbreitung

Indo-West-Pazifik: Ostafrika und Persischer Golf östlich bis zu den Philippinen und Salomonen, nördlich bis Vietnam und Südchina, südlich bis Nordaustralien.
