Etymologie

Kypselos (= Schwalbe (Vogel)), Anspielung nicht erklärt, möglicherweise in Anspielung auf Plinius, der den fliegenden Fisch Hirundo (antiker Name und heutiger Gattungsname für Schwalben) nannte, weil er "wirklich fast so fliegt wie der so genannte Vogel", und/oder auf Swainsons eigene Beschreibung des Fluges des fliegenden Fisches, der, "obwohl kurz, sehr schnell ist, - fast so schnell wie der einer Schwalbe"; oura (= Schwanz), Anspielung, die nicht erklärt wird und sich möglicherweise darauf bezieht, dass ihre gegabelten Schwänze denen einer Schwalbe ähneln, bei denen die Flugkraft am größten ist, "wenn der Schwanz ebenfalls gegabelt ist: Die gewöhnliche Hausschwalbe zeigt dies in Perfektion".
