Holotypus: NMG (kleineres Exemplar von 2 von Stat. 319).
Paratypen: NMG (4 + 1)
Typusfundort: Nord-Atlantik, 22°31'N, 23°28'W bis 22°41'N, 23°10'W (Karte), Station 319, 4.872-4.867 m Tiefe.
Etymologie
Von profundus (= tief); –cola (= Bewohner oder Einwohner); alle bekannten Exemplare wurden derzeit zwischen 4.000 und 5.000 m erfasst, "was bedeutet, dass es sich um einen ausgesprochenen Tiefseefisch handelt". (Übersetzt aus: The ETYFish Project)

Ost-Atlantik: Vor der Bucht von Biskaya und Kanarische Inseln.
