Etymologie
Von filhote de capa preta, portugiesischer Name für diesen Wels, d.h. "Tigerwels mit schwarzem Mantel oder Umhang", der sich auf die extrem dunkle Rückenfärbung der erwachsenen Tiere bezieht. (Übersetzt aus: The ETYFish Project)
Verbreitung
Amazonas von Belém, Brasilien, flussaufwärts bis mindestens Iquitos, Peru, sowie mehrere große Nebenflüsse und Seen wie Trombetas, Madeira, Negro, Manacapuru, Purus, Tefé, Juruá, Jutaí und Içá.
