Etymologie
Pterygion (= Verkleinerungsform von pteryx = Flosse); alces (= Elch), bezieht sich auf seine handförmigen Brustflossen, die dem handförmigen Geweih eines Elchs ähneln. (Übersetzt aus: The ETYFish Project)

Östlicher antarktischer Kontinentalabhang: Vor Terre Adélie.
