Typusfundort: Vor der Insel Guadeloupe, Westindische Inseln, Tiefe 769 Faden, 16°03'10"N, 61°52'20"W (Karte).
Etymologie

Verbreitung
Barathronus bicolor kommt im Westatlantik von Cape Fear N.C. (33°38’N) in südlicher Richtung bis vor Rio de Janeiro (23°46.7’S) vor. Gilchrist (1906: 158) verweist auf ein 120 mm großes Exemplar, das von Cape Agulhas gefangen wurde, aber die Identifizierung kann nicht überprüft werden, da das Exemplar verloren ging. Alle Exemplare wurden in Tiefen von 366 bis 1640 m gefangen, mit einer Ausnahme von 3270 m - allesamt mit Grundschleppnetzen.
