Typusfundort: Vor den Hawaii-Inseln, Zentralpazifik, 21°12'N, 159°38'30"W (Karte), Tiefe 686 Meter.
Etymologie
Ather (= Dorn); odon (= Zahn), bezogen auf „äußere Reihe weit gesetzter Eckzähne mit deutlich pfeilförmigen Spitzen“ auf der Prämaxillare. (Übersetzt aus: The ETYFish Project)
Verbreitung
Pazifik: hawaiianische Inseln. Vor Taiwan gefundene Exemplare, wurden später als Ventrifossa macroptera identifiziert.
