Benannt zu Ehren des Naturforschers und Ethnologen Edward William Nelson (1855-1934), Division of Biological Survey, U.S. Department of Agriculture, der bei der Sammlung der Art half (und feststellte, dass sie der beste Süßwasser-Speisefisch in Mexiko ist). (Übersetzt aus: The ETYFish Project)

Gefahren für diese Art: Potamarius nelson ist in seinem gesamten Verbreitungsgebiet durch Wasserverschmutzung aus städtischen, industriellen und landwirtschaftlichen Quellen, Staudämme, Verschlammung, Bergbau, Überfischung und Einführung exotischer Fische bedroht.
